Unit 5 Projects

Alebrijes Project
  • For this project I decided to make a snail for my spirit animal. While researching Alebrije, the bright colors, characteristic of the style stood out to me. From all the examples I had found online I decided to start with a indigo color as a base, and work of that with red, yellow, and green. The patterns stood out to me as well, especially the intricate polka-dotted texture on some pieces, I decided to use this technique as well to create the texture of a snail's skin. Something special I noticed from Alebrije snails especially was the tendency to add large eyes on the sides of the snails head, as a result, from a profile view these snails looked very rabbit-like, which was an effect I used in my project, as I thought it was fitting of the theme of multiple animals combined. In the piece the coloring is coming from under glaze exclusively, as to prevent bleeding colors/textures. To create the snail's shell a snake of clay was rolled over itself into a spiral pattern, creating a stylistic 2-d shape to a normally 3-d shell. The part I had best accomplished in this piece was the coloring, I think I well mimicked the bright colors and interesting patterns found in the Alebrijes style.
