Unit 2 Projects

6 Stamps Project
  • The stamp project was my first introduction to working with clay.  In this project I learned how to use the tools, and how to blend clay. I do not have any photos of my stamps, as I lost my phone over the summer, and did not have a phone for the first few weeks of school.

Face Sculpture
  • This project was my second favorite so far. My first design idea was a shrunken head, but after this it began morphing in my mind and hands into a man trapped in a desert dying of dehydration. In this project I learned how to slip and score.

Relief Tile Project
  • This was my first time working with slabs of clay. I shaped my slab into a rough square or tile shape. Then using the signing tool I scribed in an image of a ship at sea with a squid beneath the water. I first drew the image on a paper and then layed in on the tile and traced. Then I used underglaze to color. I plan to go back and glaze fully with a clear glaze.

Pinch Pots
  • In the pinch pots project I achieved walls of even thickness and a pinch pot with a lid. My pinch pot with a lid I made into a mushroom, although it looks closer to a cookie jar. For this project I did not use underglaze, instead waiting and using a white glaze on the outside of the base, and a red and white glazes on the lid. For the inside of the jar I used the Starry Night glaze with crystals inside. It turned out very well.

Small Animal Sculpture
  • In this project I created a cat sculpture. Specifically inspired by the Garfield comics made by Jim Davis. As well as this I found inspiration from statues of the fat Buddha. Like in the slab project I used underglaze to color the cat orange and black. To create the orange I mixed the red and yellow underglazes. In my second animal sculpture I made a dinosaur. In order to assure that it could stand upright I made it attached to a stand. I also did not use an underglaze, instead I covered it entirely in a glossy red glaze.
